The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) was established in 1987 for the purpose of exchanging information and human resources concerning distance-learning between open universities and related institutions in Asia.

International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE)
The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) was established in Canada in 1938 as an international council related to distance-learning.

Korea–China–Japan Seminar
The Korea–China–Japan Seminar is a seminar held to promote the development of distance-learning in each country and explore ways for cooperation through academic exchanges between KNOU, Open University of China, and Open University of Japan, all of which are major distance-learning institutions in their respective countries.
Starting with KNOU in 2009, the seminar is held by each university rotationally every year.

Academic Exchange Program
AAOU Exchange Fellowship Program
The AAOU Exchange Fellowship Program is a short-term training program for faculty members that started in 1997 to promote personal exchange among AAOU member universities and share distance-learning technology and know-how.
KNOU invites two to three faculty members from other member unversities every year and provides airfare when its faculty members are invited ( www.aaou.org/call-for-offers).

UNESCO-UNITWIN
University Twinning & Networking (UNITWIN)
University Twinning & Networking is a project adopted at the 26th General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1992, which promotes research, training, and program development through exchanges and associations among universities and higher education institutions.
KNOU was selected as a UNITWIN host university in 2017 and is currently cooperating with four universities in Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, and Nepal and with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding for capacity-building in distance-learning in developing countries.
